Small group aurora tour Kiruna

Private vs Group Northern Lights Tour in Kiruna

What actually changes when you book private — honest breakdown of cost, flexibility, and who should choose which.

Published 20 April 2026 · 5 min read

Quick decision tree: 1–3 adults with no special requirements usually fit best on a small-group tour. Families with young children, photography-focused trips, proposals, and parties of four or more should consider asking about a private arrangement.

What a "group" tour actually is in Kiruna

Our Northern Lights tour takes a maximum of 16 guests per night, in 2 comfortable heated vans. You share the guide, the warm drinks and light snacks, and the evening's route with other travellers. Pickups cluster across a few hotels within Kiruna city, which adds some minutes to the start of the evening.

You're not mixed with large tour buses. Smaller is standard in Kiruna — the economics of aurora chasing don't work for 30-seat coaches in sub-zero conditions on narrow roads.

What private typically changes

Cost

Group tour pricing is published: adults (13+) from 1,490 SEK, children 6–12 from 1,190 SEK — the final price may be higher on high-demand dates such as peak season and Christmas/New Year.

We don't publish a fixed private price, because a private evening depends on group size, date, vehicle and season. Private arrangements may be possible on request — contact Aurora Dreams with your group size, date and requirements for an individual availability check and quote. As a general pattern in the industry, the larger your own party, the smaller the per-person difference between private and group tends to be — but ask for a real quote rather than relying on rules of thumb.

When to choose private

Photography trip

On a group tour the guide's attention is shared across everyone. A private evening generally means more of that attention for you and more time for phone photos at each stop. Note that neither option is a professional photography tour — bring your own equipment if you shoot seriously, and remember sightings and photos are never guaranteed.

Family with young children

Kids get cold, bored, or need the bathroom on their schedule. A private arrangement makes it easier to shorten the evening if your 7-year-old has had enough, instead of waiting for the group.

Proposals, honeymoons, special occasions

A proposal under the aurora works better without strangers watching. If the evening has a personal purpose, tell us when you enquire — a quiet moment and a phone photo can often be planned, and we'll be honest about what is possible on the night.

Elderly or mobility-limited guests

A private pace gives more control over stop choices, walking distances and warm-up breaks.

Language-specific groups

Our guide speaks Swedish and Russian fluently and can communicate in practical English. On a private arrangement you can ask in advance for the evening to run fully in Swedish or Russian.

How to ask about a private arrangement

  1. Message us via WhatsApp or email with: number of people, preferred date, and any special requirement (photography, proposal, language, mobility).
  2. We check availability and reply honestly about what is possible.
  3. If it works, you receive an individual quote — the terms that apply are confirmed with the quote.

Questions we get about private

"Do I get a better guide if I book private?"
No. The guide is the same. The difference is allocation of their attention, not their expertise.

"Can I add extras to a private tour?"
Tell us what you have in mind when you enquire — some things are possible depending on season and logistics, and we'll say honestly what is and isn't.

"Is private better for seeing aurora?"
No. Aurora visibility is decided by weather and solar activity, and is never guaranteed on any tour. Both private and group evenings chase the same conditions. The difference is experience quality, not outcome.

Straightforward recommendation

If this is your first Kiruna trip, your party is 1-3 people, and you have no special requirement: book the group tour. Put the saved money toward an extra night or a second activity (ice fishing, Abisko day tour).

If you're 4+ people, travelling with young kids, proposing, or specifically photography-focused: ask about a private arrangement — contact us with your group size, date and requirements for an individual availability check and quote.

Book the group tour → Message us for a private quote if the private scenarios match you.
